Letter 4420

Will the day contain great deeds or small?
Working in the garden, the efforts all bend toward the small: weeding, digging with a hand shovel.
Raising a barn, the work is large: great beams, walls, a roof.
❖
Later, is not the satisfaction from each the same? My labor showed results.
Let me not judge myself in my own work, Lord. Let me take satisfaction in offering all to you.
Consider:
Can I devote even small things to you, Lord?

❖ “The growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.” — George Eliot, Middlemarch
❖ “We ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed.” — Brother Lawrence, The Practice of the Presence of God
❖ “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” — Colossians 3:23 (KJV)
