Letter 4547

I worry over what may happen. Will my garden perish? Will a flood wash away the bridge? Will the animals escape? Will my neighbors turn against me?
I am the master of my own fantasies, and I use this power to create dramas that lack you, O Lord. Were I to imagine future scenes with you present, there would be no calamity nor woe.
❖
You are here with me and all is well. Why do I imagine a future without you?
Let me imagine a tomorrow as glorious as today already is, Lord.
Consider:
Can I have peace as I think about the future?

❖ “Our doubts are traitors, / And make us lose the good we oft might win, / By fearing to attempt.” — William Shakespeare, Measure for Measure
❖ “Think only of the present, abandon the future to Providence.” — Jean-Pierre de Caussade, Abandonment to Divine Providence
❖ “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.” — Matthew 6:34 (KJV)
