Beloved Child

All of us family.

What is your view of me, Lord?

The story I tell myself of myself is by turns tragic and heroic. Wins and losses. The character at the center of my tale is always singular.

What if I am simply one of many beloved children?

❖

The world is not a battle to be won nor a trial to be endured.

We are all of us family on a journey — let me company with my fellow travelers, help one or two, and receive help from another.

Consider:

Can I feel truly part of humanity, as a child?

Clarity

Bright sun can blind.

In the morning, your guidance is bathed in clarity and force. How could I mistake your will under such conditions?

I leave my rooms and walk through the day. Come noon, that which was so clear is now covered in gauze. The high sun befuddles me.

❖

Lord, let me pause even in the midst of great activity, let me retreat and re-hear your words.

Grant me renewed and refreshed guidance, come noon. Grant me willingness to search for it.

Consider:

Can I pause even midday, to regain clarity?

Waiting

A hidden opportunity.

It is storming outside my door, but the squall came quickly and will leave soon. I am waiting.

The garden has pushed up through the soil and plants carry the production. It is not yet ready for harvest. I am waiting.

I have sent off a request and not yet heard the answer. I am waiting.

❖

What shall I do with the time? These moments before what will happen has happened — these are what I have.

Let me not wait to live, Lord.

Consider:

Can I fully live life, even while I am waiting?

Ordinary

Thankful to not be the at the center.

Thankful that I am not at the center of things, I could not bear it.

Thankful that the sun rise and sets irrespective of my doings. The world’s clockwork continues.

Thankful that the rains fall upon my neighbors and myself all at once. The world treats us the same.

Thankful that, while a unique individual, I am not unlike my fellows. We are commonly human.

❖

Lord, thank you for making me one of many, a part of the whole.

Can I be grateful that I am not the central actor in the story of the world?
