Battles

Letter 4472

Walking from my bed to the front room, I already see things I would change. Clothes out of place, a dish left out.

As I sit in devotion, before the window, I see the glass needs cleaning.

In the garden, overnight came the rabbits who eat the leaves of my tomatoes.

By day’s end, am I weary from fighting battle after battle with a world that slowly disorders? Or do I stop to discover:

A sunset, glorious in its red hues spreading across the horizon.

Let me not fight every battle, Lord.

Consider:

Can I leave today’s battles for a later time?

The Trail

Letter 4471

What part of the pathway troubles me? The rocky incline? The unshaded and exposed high switchbacks? The narrow cliff edge trail? Even the summit poses problems of wind and exposure.

It all melts away on my safe return home.

Why did I go on the journey? Could it be to feel the warmth of homecoming?

Consider:

Can I accept today’s journey?

Unseen

Letter 4470

Something ensures that the stone I toss falls to the ground.

I cannot see the wind, yet the saplings bend and the shed door flaps.

After a summer shower, the puddles disappear by nightfall.

I cannot see all the forces at work, yet I see their effects. What of my life? I cannot see what is creating the miracles that compound daily — yet let me trust that they are there nonetheless.

Inexorable, unseen forces are with me.

Consider:

Can I abandon myself to providence?

To Understand

Letter 4469

I have machines in my home that I do not know the workings of.

How do the lights burn? How do the faucets flow? And yet I use them daily.

Outside, the same: How does the hare find the fence gap? How do the clouds carry rain?

Is it necessary that I understand the miracles I constantly see? Let me not try to pry them open.

Consider:

Can I accept miracles today?
